"Life is short, And we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who make the journey with us. So… be swift to love, and make haste to be kind. And the blessing of God, who made us, who loves us, and who travels with us be with us now and forever." We at GSH have been using the above words to close our Morning Prayer Services. They were shared by a friend who heard them at All Saints Episcopal Church in Duck, NC. It was originally a blessing given at the closing Eucharist of the 2010 convention of the Diocese of Maine, based on the words of Henri Frederic Amiel (1821-1881).

In September 2017, the House of Bishops gathered in Alaska. Over 120 Bishops flew across the vast state in order to be present with Episcopalians in their villages. The focus of the gathering was environmental and racial justice, with the Bishops and their spouses immersing themselves in local examples of creation care and reconciliation. Here you can see videos of their experience. Look for Bishops Michael Curry, Shannon Johnson and Susan Goff.
Andrew Wyeth, the American painter, died in January 2009. One of the best known artists of the 20th century, Wyeth mostly painted in the realistic style, but in an evocative, imaginative way. My grandparents, on their living room wall, had a copy of his painting, "Christina's World" (featuring a girl lying on a hillside below a house). I spent many hours staring at that picture. The US Postal Service recently issued a series of stamps of some of his paintings. This video shows many of his most famous works.

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others,” said Mohandas Gandhi, who was assassinated 70 years ago on 1/30/1948. A pioneer of the nonviolence movement, Gandhi led his native India to independence from British rule through a series of peaceful campaigns. Learn more about him by watching this short video highlighting his powerful life.

Marian Anderson, an opera singer, was born in 1897. She was one of the original recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She had obvious talent from a young age, but her family could not afford lessons. She taught herself to play the piano. After her father died when she was only twelve years old, her church raised the money for her to train as an opera singer. She became very successful, and was the first African American to perform at the White House and at the New York Metropolitan Opera. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt arranged for Anderson to perform at an integrated concert for 75,000 people, in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Watch her perform "My Country 'Tis of Thee," on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Celebrate Pentecost Sunday, May 20. “Clearly we have not ‘been left orphans.’ The Holy Spirit has indeed come. The only condition of the Presence is that we allow ourselves to see the compelling reality of it, that we watch for it ‘like a sentry for the coming of dawn.’ The condition is that we do not take God for granted… The Descent of the Holy Spirit is the call to be abandoned to the will of God. It is a call to risk the consequences of God’s love, here and now.”
—from In Pursuit of Peace, by Joan Chittister
Listen to or read Presiding Bishop Michael Curry's words as he preaches the power of love at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
“It seems so much easier in these days to live morally than to live beautifully. Lots of us manage to exist for years without ever sinning against society, but we sin against loveliness every hour of the day,” wrote Evelyn Underhill, novelist and poet who died in 1941. The first woman to ever give lectures and retreats to Church of England clergy, she wrote extensively about mysticism, ecumenism, and worship. In her latter years, her writings centered on the spiritual life as lived by ordinary people. How can you live in beauty or loveliness this week?
